Jenny Pong is no ordinary teacher, or even woman for that fact.
At the age of 20, she had a miscarriage and fell into a coma for two years. Both her legs caught gangrene and had to be amputated, leaving her lying prone. Along with that, she has also been suffering from other health complications like diabetes and kidney failure. Experts predicted that she would not be able to survive, but she braved it all with the help of her mother and her own perseverance.
30 years later, she is still living life with a smile on her face despite having gone through multiple challenges and hardships.
Jenny, as the hard working and independent woman she is, did not sit around and wait for donations to come her way despite her disability. For almost 20 years, she has been making handicrafts like knitting and crocheting. eHomemakers has also been supporting her by including her in Salaam Wanita. Most of this handicraft work can only be done if she is in a prone position on her wooden trolley. In 2013, she underwent a major surgery to save her life, and since then, the doctors have asked for her to be in a sitting position more, which means that she cannot rely on making handicrafts as her income generation.
As part of the support that eHomemakers has been giving to Jenny, we are now carrying out a scheme for her to be self-reliant. We are helping her start giving Skype lessons by setting up Internet connection and a computer with a webcam. With this, Jenny can now work from the comforts of her home, the hospital or anywhere else that she is. The flexible timing provided by this scheme is perfect for someone like her as she has to frequent the hospital for appointments and take breaks throughout the day due to her condition. This also helps her with income generation, as she can always sit on her wheelchair and have the lessons instead of lying down on her trolley.
Everyone who has met Jenny so far are often struck by her cheerfulness and willingness to share, whether it is her story or her view on life. These are the two main characteristics that make Jenny a suitable teacher and motivational speaker.
